What is it?
A SwitchBot is a small, smart device that physically presses buttons or switches on command, allowing users to automate or remotely control non-smart devices. It can be attached to light switches, coffee makers, or other appliances that require a button press. SwitchBots can be operated via a smartphone app, voice assistant, or even adapted switches, making them especially useful for individuals with physical disabilities who have difficulty accessing or pressing traditional buttons.
How to use it?
To use a SwitchBot, simply stick it next to the button or switch you want to control using the included adhesive. Connect it to the SwitchBot app via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi (if using a hub), and configure settings such as schedule, mode, or voice assistant integration. For users with disabilities, the SwitchBot can be paired with accessible controls—like voice commands through Alexa or Google Assistant, or adapted switches—for easy activation from a distance or with appropriate physical effort.
Why use it?
SwitchBots enhance independence by allowing students or individuals with physical or motor disabilities to control devices that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to operate. In inclusive classrooms, they can support participation in classroom routines—such as turning on a fan or starting a device during a science experiment. At home or in the community, they make everyday tasks like turning on lights or starting appliances more accessible, promoting autonomy and reducing reliance on others.
