What is it?
A switch-activated pouring cup is an adaptive device designed to help individuals with physical disabilities pour liquids independently. The cup or pitcher is mounted on a tilting base that is controlled by an external switch. When the switch is pressed, the device gently tilts the container, allowing the liquid to pour into another container such as a cup or bowl. This tool is especially useful for individuals with limited hand strength, coordination, or motor control.
How to use it?
To use the switch-activated pouring cup, place the container filled with liquid onto the device’s base and position the receiving container below the spout. Plug in an accessible switch that suits the user’s physical abilities—such as a button, proximity switch, or sip-and-puff device. When the switch is activated, the device tilts the container to pour. Once the desired amount is dispensed, releasing the switch returns the container to its upright position.
Why use it?
This device promotes independence and safety for students or individuals with physical disabilities by allowing them to complete a daily living task—pouring liquids—without needing fine motor control or upper body strength. In inclusive classrooms, it can be used during cooking lessons or life skills instruction, enabling students to participate fully. In home or community settings, it supports greater autonomy and dignity in tasks like making a drink or helping with meals, fostering inclusion and confidence across environments.
