What is it?
A slant board is a portable, angled writing surface designed to promote better posture, visual access, and hand positioning during writing, reading, or drawing tasks. It typically sits at a 20–30 degree angle and can be made of lightweight materials like plastic or wood. In the inclusive classroom, slant boards are particularly beneficial for students with disabilities who may experience challenges with fine motor control, vision, or physical endurance when working on flat surfaces.
How to use it?
To use a slant board, place it on a desk or table and position paper, books, or worksheets securely on its surface, often using built-in clips or elastic bands. Students then work on the slanted surface, which helps to stabilize the wrist, align the forearm correctly, and bring materials closer to the eyes. Slant boards can be easily adjusted or moved to different work areas, making them flexible supports for writing, reading, or art activities throughout the day.
Why use it?
Using slant boards in the inclusive classroom supports students’ physical comfort, visual tracking, and fine motor skills, helping them engage more successfully in academic tasks. For students with disabilities, slant boards can reduce fatigue, improve handwriting legibility, and make reading or writing less physically demanding. By offering simple, low-tech tools like slant boards, educators create a more accessible and supportive environment where all learners can participate actively and confidently.
