What is it?
Digital organization and task management tools help learners keep track of assignments, responsibilities, schedules, materials, and upcoming tasks. These may include digital calendars, reminders, to-do lists, timers, planning apps, or task-management features built into commonly used devices and learning platforms. Tools can range from simple alerts to more detailed systems for organizing multi-step projects. One example of a digital organization tool is the “Rocketbook.”
How to use it?
Choose tools that match what the learner needs help managing rather than adding unnecessary complexity. A learner might use calendar alerts for upcoming assignments, a digital checklist for daily responsibilities, reminders for transitions, or a task-management app to break a project into smaller steps. Explicitly teach how to use the tool and build its use into authentic routines. Whenever possible, support learners in gradually managing their own systems, including deciding what needs to be recorded, prioritized, or scheduled.
Why use it?
Digital organization tools can provide external support for executive functioning skills such as remembering, planning, prioritizing, estimating time, and monitoring progress. Because reminders and information remain available when needed, learners do not have to rely solely on memory or adult prompting. Effective systems can increase independence and help learners develop strategies they can use across classrooms, home, community, and eventually workplace settings.
