Explore how AI can expand inclusion and meaningful communication for students who use AAC. This session will describe emerging tools, analyze when AI supports or overrides a student’s intent, and help participants develop ethical, evidence-based strategies that amplify student autonomy, authorship, and authentic voice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe how emerging AI tools can enhance communication autonomy and authorship for AAC users.
  2. Analyze case examples to identify when AI features support versus override user intent.
  3. Develop practical strategies for integrating AI-enhanced AAC tools that amplify user voice within ethical and evidence-based frameworks.

Agenda:

  1. Welcome & Framing (10 min)
    Introduction,, overview, and reflection on AI as a scaffold for authentic communication.
  2. Ethics and Evidence (15 min)
    When AI supports versus overrides user intent; aligning with best practices.
  3. Teachable moments: Idea generation, Vocabulary expansion and Sentence Structure (30 Min)
  4. From Access to Authorship: Modeling AAC & AI (50 min)
    Reframing writing and communication for intent, identity, and agency.
  5. What’s Possible – Future of AI: Guest Speaking – Alan Vu (15 Minutes)
  6. AI in the IEP as Assistive Technology (25 min)
    Connecting present levels of performance, goals, and documentation to support AI co-authorship.
  7. Reflection & Application (15 min)
    Group discussion: using AI + AAC to amplify—not replace—student voice.
  8. Final Reflection/Informal Assessment (5 min)

Audience: 

SLPs in K-12 schools working with students who use AAC.
SLP, OT, PT, COTA, Paraeducator, Teacher, Special Education Teacher, Parents, TVI
No prerequisite learning or materials needed.

Completion requires learners to (1) view/attend the instructional presentation in full; (2) complete informal learning assessment/reflection. Attendance will be monitored through Zoom. Course requirements must be submitted no later than March 2nd 2026.
