iOS + Built-In Accessibility Features

iOS + Built-In Accessibility Features

What is it?

iOS’s built-in accessibility features are tools embedded in Apple devices like iPads and iPhones that support users with a wide range of disabilities. These features include VoiceOver (a screen reader), Speak Screen, Magnifier, AssistiveTouch, Switch Control, Sound Recognition, and guided access tools for focus and behavior support. Designed to be flexible and easy to activate, these tools help make iOS devices more accessible for individuals with visual, hearing, motor, or cognitive differences.

How to use it?

To access iOS accessibility features, go to Settings > Accessibility on an iPad or iPhone. From there, you can turn on and customize tools based on the user’s needs—such as enabling VoiceOver for a student who is blind, turning on Speak Screen for text-to-speech, or setting up Switch Control for users with limited mobility. Teachers and support staff can also use Guided Access to limit a student’s access to specific apps or features during learning time to support attention and independence.

Why use it?

iOS accessibility features empower students with disabilities to interact with technology in ways that support their unique learning needs and strengths. In inclusive classrooms, these tools help remove barriers to accessing curriculum, communication, and classroom activities. Whether it’s a student using voice commands to navigate, magnifying the screen to see text clearly, or controlling the device with a switch, iOS tools promote independence, equity, and participation—helping all students thrive in digital learning environments.
