What is it?

A smart plug is a device that plugs into a standard electrical outlet and allows connected appliances or electronics to be turned on or off remotely using a smartphone app, voice command, or programmed schedule. Once a device—like a lamp, fan, or coffee maker—is plugged into the smart plug, it becomes "smart" and can be controlled without needing to touch the actual appliance. Smart plugs are especially useful for individuals with mobility, motor, or sensory challenges who benefit from hands-free or simplified access to their environment.

How to use it?

To use a smart plug, plug it into an outlet and connect it to Wi-Fi through its companion app (such as Alexa, Google Home, or a brand-specific app). Plug the desired device into the smart plug and label it within the app. From there, the device can be controlled by voice, scheduled automation, or through a tap in the app. For students with disabilities, smart plugs can also be paired with switches or voice-activated tools for easier access in both school and home environments.

Why use it?

Smart plugs promote independence and accessibility by allowing students with physical or cognitive disabilities to control devices without needing to reach, twist, or press small buttons. In inclusive classrooms, they can be used to help students participate in routines like turning on a light, activating a sensory tool, or controlling a classroom appliance. At home or in community settings, smart plugs support daily living tasks with greater ease and autonomy, helping individuals manage their environment safely and confidently.
