What is it?

The LOTUS Kit is a portable, simplified system that allows users to control light switches and other environmental features using a small wearable ring. With a simple point-and-click action, the Lotus Ring wirelessly activates switch covers placed over standard wall switches—no rewiring, apps, or internet required. In an inclusive classroom, this type of environmental control tool supports students in independently interacting with their surroundings, such as turning lights on and off, which can increase access, autonomy, and participation.

How to use it?

The LOTUS Kit is set up by placing the included switch covers over existing wall switches and pairing them with the Lotus Ring. Once set up, the user can point the ring toward a switch and click to activate it from anywhere in the room. In an inclusive classroom, this might look like a student independently turning off the lights for a transition, controlling a lamp in a calm-down space, or participating in classroom jobs that involve managing the environment. The system is intuitive and requires minimal setup, making it easy for educators and teams to integrate into daily routines. It can also be incorporated into communication or choice-making opportunities, especially when paired with AAC or visual supports.

Why use it?

The LOTUS Kit increases independence and access by removing physical barriers to interacting with the environment. For students with physical, motor, or mobility challenges, it provides a simple way to control their surroundings without needing direct access to a switch. In inclusive classrooms, this supports autonomy, builds confidence, and creates opportunities for meaningful participation in shared routines and responsibilities. It also aligns with Universal Design for Learning by offering flexible ways for students to engage with their environment, helping ensure that all learners can actively contribute to and navigate their space.
