What is it?

DM/FM systems are assistive listening devices that transmit a speaker’s voice directly to a listener through wireless technology. They include a microphone worn by the teacher and receivers worn by students. These systems reduce background noise and improve clarity, making them especially helpful for students with hearing loss, auditory processing challenges, or attention difficulties.

How to use it?

To use a DM/FM system, the teacher wears a microphone connected to a transmitter, while students wear receivers or personal hearing devices. Ensure the microphone is placed correctly, the devices are on the right channel, and the volume is set comfortably. Teachers should speak clearly and avoid blocking the microphone. Check batteries regularly and adjust settings for classroom layout as needed.

Why use it?

DM/FM systems improve access to instruction by delivering the teacher’s voice directly to students, helping them focus and understand better—especially in noisy environments or when seated far from the speaker. They support inclusion by helping all students, particularly those with hearing or processing difficulties, fully participate in class. These systems also reduce teacher vocal strain and improve classroom engagement for everyone.
