What is it?
Dwell selection allows a person to make a digital selection by holding the pointer or cursor over an item for a set amount of time rather than physically clicking or tapping. It can be used with access methods such as eye gaze, head tracking, joysticks, or other pointing devices. Visual indicators often show when the dwell period has started and when a selection will occur.
How to use it?
Enable dwell selection within the device, operating system, or access software and adjust the dwell time to match the learner's needs. A shorter dwell may increase speed but lead to unintended selections, while a longer dwell may improve accuracy but require more time and effort. Practice with meaningful activities and adjust settings based on accuracy, efficiency, fatigue, and the learner's preference. Provide another way to pause or cancel dwell when possible so looking or pointing does not always result in a selection.
Why use it?
Clicking, tapping, or activating a separate switch while maintaining pointer position can be physically difficult for some learners. Dwell selection separates pointing from the need to perform an additional click movement. When well matched to the user, it can provide more independent and efficient access to communication, writing, navigation, and other digital activities.
