In this 4-session series, participants will compare, analyze and discuss accessibility tools and strategies for all students to access education materials in their general education classrooms. These sessions will be based on “8 Tips To Make Curriculum Content Accessible”.  These classes will be structured in an interactive format with 30 minutes of content presentation followed by small group discussion and then implementation planning time.  The goal is to leave with 1 or 2 practical, ready to use strategies for each session. 

Are your multi-lingual and hearing-impaired learners missing parts of instruction? In this session, we will look at closed captioning options as well as translation tools that are readily available across platforms.  We will discuss ways to harness these free tools to help all learners engage in educational activities. (Tips 6 and 7)

Learning Objectives: 

Participants will:   

  1. Identify 2 ways to make a document accessible to people of different abilities. 
  2. Compare and contrast tools and strategies for providing access to text for all students. 
  3. Reflect on one way you can implement a language support tool for students with hearing loss or multi-language learners. 
  4. Name one colleague you can collaborate with to create an action plan for accessibility in your district or school.

Presenters

Linda Doehle, AT Specialist


Linda Doehle started her career as a software engineer after completing her degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics at Whitworth College. She brought her technical skills to the field of assistive technology while working as an Assistive Technology Specialist for the Yakima School District. Linda holds an AT Specialist Certificate and enjoys being able to use her technology skills in helping students optimize their abilities through the use of assistive technology. Linda has been with the Special Education Technology Center for eight years and has presented webinars and classes at national and statewide conferences. 

Rose Racicot, MS, OTR/L

Rose is an OT and Assistive Technology Specialist in Bellevue School District and at Special Education Technology Center at CWU with 34 years of experience. Her passion is to help school districts and educators implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to create inclusive classrooms for all students to succeed. Rose facilitates learning experiences on UDL, literacy support software, educational iPad apps, and accessibility features across platforms at the local, state, and national level both in-person and through remote learning.
