There’s something about back-to-school season that always feels like a fresh start. Cooler mornings. Clean backpacks. New teachers, new routines, and that hopeful feeling that this could be a really good year.
As a parent, I’ve realized I carry a lot into that first day, too. Will my kids feel welcome? Will they be known? Heard? Supported?
My kids aren’t usually the ones whose needs are immediately obvious. They tend to hold it together at school. But they still bring very real differences in how they manage attention, sensory input, executive function, communication, and the demands of a long school day.
And every fall, I find myself wondering: How long will it take for someone to notice?
Will their needs become visible only when something isn’t working? Or will they walk into a classroom where differences are already expected—and where options and supports are there from the beginning?
What would school feel like if we started there?
A Question Worth Reframing
When we expect variability from the start, the question changes.
Instead of asking: How do I support the students who are struggling?
Try asking: How can I design for the variability I know will be in the room?
The shift is subtle, but important: from waiting to see who struggles and adding support afterward, to building flexibility and access into the learning environment from the beginning.
Start with Learner Variability
We often talk about learner differences as though they are something we discover along the way. We plan the lesson. We teach it. And then, when a student has difficulty accessing, engaging with, or demonstrating their learning, we figure out what support to add.
But what if variability isn’t something we discover? What if it’s something we expect?
Every classroom already includes learners who differ in attention, language, communication, sensory processing, background knowledge, literacy, executive function, movement, motivation, and countless other ways. And those differences aren’t fixed. The same learner may need different things depending on the task, environment, time of day, familiarity, stress, or context. That makes variability less of an individual student issue, and more of a design reality.

CAST describes learner variability as one of the most consistently demonstrated findings in educational research. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) starts from this premise: because there is no single way of engaging, accessing information, or expressing learning that will work optimally for everyone, learning environments should be designed with options from the beginning.
The important shift isn’t that every student needs every support. It’s that access shouldn’t depend on being identified as the student who needs something different.
When we design this way, we’re not trying to predict exactly what every learner will need. We’re creating enough flexibility that more learners can find a pathway that works for them.
The goal isn’t to design for every possible learner. It’s to stop designing as though there is only one.
From Insight to Action
1. Make Supports ordinary.
- TRY: Choose a few supports that could benefit many learners and make them readily available, without requiring students to ask, qualify, or “earn” them.
- WHY: When useful supports are built into the environment, students have more opportunities to access and participate in learning without first demonstrating difficulty. Accessible materials and technologies can strengthen opportunities for access, participation, and progress.
- EXAMPLE: Keep headphones, fidgets, visual directions, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, timers, alternative seating, and communication supports available as everyday classroom options, not special accommodations brought out only for certain students.

2. Build more than one pathway.
- TRY: Look at an upcoming learning activity and ask: Where am I unintentionally requiring everyone to do this the same way? Add one meaningful alternative.
- WHY: There is no single way of accessing information, engaging in learning, moving through an environment, or expressing understanding that works optimally for every learner. Building flexibility into a task can reduce barriers while keeping the learning goal intact.
- EXAMPLE: If the goal is to demonstrate understanding of a science concept, students might explain it aloud, type a response, or draw and label a model. Same learning goal. Multiple ways to get there.

3. Ask before you assume.
- TRY: Build simple opportunities for students to tell or show you what helps them learn, communicate, focus, participate, and regulate.
- WHY: Learner variability is contextual. A student who prefers quiet for one task may want peer collaboration for another. Preferences and support needs can also change over time. Asking learners builds agency and gives us information we can’t get by observation alone.

Access Tip
Try the “Who Has to Ask?” scan.
Look around your classroom and identify supports students currently need permission to use, such as headphones, alternative seating, fidgets, text-to-speech, visual directions, breaks, AAC, or other tools.
Choose one that could be available to everyone without asking.
Sometimes increasing access isn’t about adding another support. It’s about removing the gate around one that’s already there.

One Last Thought
As students walk into classrooms this fall, we won’t know everything about what each of them needs. We don’t have to. We can start simply by expecting difference—and designing with enough flexibility to make room for it.
Maybe the goal isn’t to get better at noticing who needs something different. Maybe it’s to create classrooms where students don’t have to struggle before we notice.
