Culturally Responsive Technology for Inclusion: Embracing Cultural Humility
Incorporating culturally responsive practices is essential for creating inclusive learning environments that honor the diverse backgrounds and experiences of students with disabilities. This begins with meaningful family engagement —actively involving families in the educational process to understand and incorporate their cultural values, perspectives, and needs into teaching strategies.

By fostering strong partnerships with families, educators can create personalized learning experiences that resonate with students’ identities. Dr. Danielle Scott, an expert in cultural responsiveness, highlights the importance of cultural humility — an ongoing practice of self-reflection, lifelong learning, and building partnerships with families. Unlike cultural competency, cultural humility emphasizes continually addressing biases and embracing diverse perspectives. In professional development, it’s important for school districts to model these practices by encouraging educators to reflect on their own cultural perspectives and use inclusive teaching tools. The handouts Inclusive Presentations: Strategies for Cultural Awareness and Accessibility and Culturally Responsible
Professional Development Rubric contain easy to follow guidance and suggestions for ensuring that content and delivery is inclusive, culturally responsive, and affirming for a diverse audience. By integrating cultural humility into our practice, we can better address the challenges of over- identification and under-service in marginalized communities and ensure every student feels valued and supported.
