Description
Integrating AI into AAC intervention requires more than access to tools. It requires intentional clinical decision-making that supports authorship, language development, and literacy. Without structured support, AI may risk overriding user intent or limiting opportunities for active language learning. This session provides strategies for integrating AI into AAC through prompting and modeling.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Analyze two examples of prompting that support or limit AAC user authorship
- Apply two modeling strategies that support language expansion and literacy development using AI
- Implement strategies that support user selection and refinement of AI-generated language

8:30 AM – 8:45 AM (15 min) | Introductions, disclosures, session objectives
8:45 AM – 9:00 AM (15 min) | Clinical decision-making in AAC. Recognizing when support enhances or limits authorship.
9:00 AM – 9:30 AM (30 min) | Prompting with intention. Maintaining user initiation and avoiding over-scaffolding.
9:30 AM – 10:00 AM (30 min) | Modeling strategies for language expansion. Supporting comparison, selection, and refinement.
10:00 AM – 10:35 AM (35 min) | AI as a tool for language and literacy development. Expanding vocabulary, sentence structure, and message complexity.
10:35 AM – 11:05 AM (30 min) | Supporting metalinguistic awareness and early writing skills. Using AI to build language understanding and flexibility.
11:05 AM – 11:20 AM (15 min) | Case studies and guided analysis of clinical scenarios.
11:20 AM – 11:30 AM (10 min) | Summary, reflection, and participant questions
Course Completion Requirements:
Completion requires learners to (1) view/attend the instructional presentation in full; (2) complete informal learning assessment/reflection. Attendance will be monitored through Zoom.
Course requirements must be submitted no later than 2/8/2027.
Partial credit will not be offered.
