Word Prediction

ExploratoriumAcademics: Writing

What is it?

Word prediction is an assistive technology tool that suggests words as a student types, helping them complete sentences more efficiently and accurately. The software predicts likely words based on the first few letters typed and the context of the sentence. In the inclusive classroom, word prediction supports students with disabilities, including those with learning disabilities, motor challenges, or spelling difficulties, by reducing the effort required to write and helping them express their ideas more clearly.

How to use it?

To use word prediction, students type the beginning of a word into a compatible app, software program, or device. A list of word suggestions appears, and the student selects the desired word to insert it into their writing. Teachers can support students by adjusting settings such as the number of suggestions displayed, activating topic-specific dictionaries, and providing practice in using the tool efficiently. Word prediction can be integrated across writing tasks, from short answers to essays, to help students stay focused and motivated.

Why use it?

Using word prediction in an inclusive classroom levels the playing field by making writing more accessible and less frustrating for students with disabilities. It reduces cognitive and physical load, allowing students to focus on content rather than getting stuck on spelling, grammar, or slow typing. Word prediction builds writing confidence, encourages independence, and helps students produce more complete, detailed work, promoting greater participation and success in literacy activities for all learners.
