What is it?
uPAR (Universal Protocol for Accommodations in Reading) is an online assessment tool developed to help educators determine the most effective reading accommodations for students. It evaluates a student's comprehension under two conditions: independent silent reading and listening with a read-aloud accommodation. By comparing performance in these scenarios, uPAR identifies whether students benefit from accommodations like text-to-speech, aiding in making informed decisions for instructional planning and IEP development.
How to use it?
Educators administer uPAR through its online platform, where students read or listen to passages and answer comprehension questions. The assessment is designed for efficiency, typically taking 20–30 minutes, and can be administered to individuals or groups. Upon completion, uPAR generates detailed reports highlighting each student's comprehension levels across different reading modes, providing actionable data to guide accommodation decisions.
Why use it?
Implementing uPAR in inclusive classrooms supports equitable access to grade-level content by identifying students who may benefit from reading accommodations. It empowers educators to tailor instruction based on individual needs, promoting independence and confidence among learners. By providing empirical data, uPAR aids in creating a more inclusive learning environment where all students have the opportunity to succeed.
