Description
Emergent foundational literacy instruction for students with Complex Communication Needs is something that was not always “done.” Sometimes, teachers didn’t know how to teach non-speaking students to read or students with complex bodies to write. And other times, people didn’t believe certain students could learn these skills. Fortunately, as people learn better, they do better. Sharing emergent literacy instruction strategies district-wide is the goal… figuring out how can be the challenge.
Join Sara Ayars and Alli Barwise, Assistive Technology Coordinators and Speech Language Pathologists, as they take you on a step-by-step tour of Bellevue School District’s approach to emergent literacy instruction, as well as what next steps they plan to take.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
· Participants will understand the importance of literacy instruction for ALL students
· Participants will identify key stakeholders to involve in roll-out efforts
· Participants will identify a “next-step” to beginning/continuing emergent literacy instruction
