Description

“This engaging book includes daily strategies accompanied by examples of tools that can be implemented immediately to design meaningful instruction. Topics covered include role-playing games for social-emotional learning, building literacy through captioned video, coding to teach early literacy, text-to-speech for math and reading, and much more!
Educators across the world are working to design individualized instruction that empowers every student to become experts at learning. Technology and instructional interventions designed to support students with disabilities often eventually become mainstream and used by the masses. These practices provide a pathway for designing inclusive, equitable and accessible educational experiences that meet the needs of every individual learner.
The heart of the book is the shift in mindset that occurs by exploring a different practical, inclusive strategy each day and infusing these strategies into everyday practice.”

We are calling these book study sessions “Inclusive Chatters.” These sessions are a time for educators to come together to talk and collaborate around tech ideas to support inclusive learning. Facilitators will provide guiding questions to encourage participants to share their favorite parts of the book as well as strategies they plan to apply from the book.

Description

Join us as we embark on our Literacy for All journey.  We will be diving into the groundbreaking book Comprehensive Literacy for All written by Karen Erickson and David Koppenhaver (2020).  The book is divided into four sections:  Core Understandings, Building a Foundation for Literacy, Learning to Read and Write, and Implementation

Rather than go through the book in chronological order, we will tackle this book from a skill teaching perspective to support teachers in meeting the needs of a diverse group of learners. In this year-long book study, we will be starting with setting our core understanding and then discussing the implementation and lesson plans. Then we dive deep into teaching literacy skills focusing on vocabulary work sets the stage for phonological, word work, and reading comprehension. We will be providing resource and lesson plan templates to assist all our Book Study participants in being able to create their own CLFA lessons. This may be a bit unconventional, but our hope is that the teacher and therapist will be able to walk away from each of our 45-minute sessions with resources and practical tips to use in the classroom the very next day.  So join us on our journey as we take the road less traveled and mix it up!
