SETC staff members will lead a book study on Dr. Paula Kluth’s book, Universal Design Daily. This book gives practical ideas for how to incorporate Universal Design to build your inclusive classroom without being overwhelmed. The book is broken up into three sections and the final section is broken up into three parts. During this evening book study we hope to encourage conversation and exploration with each 30 minute session and hope that participants will find time between each session to try some of the tips. Together, with your expertise and excitement, we will be putting the ideas into practice as we go through the book study. FREE books will be provided by Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession for Washington State educators while supplies last!

Participants will:

● Learn/review the foundational ideas/principles of Universal Design for Learning
● Learn tools/tips for creating inclusive classrooms utilizing the UDL framework
● Learn tips for increasing student choice within classroom learning experiences
● Learn ideas for collaboration to help all students be successful learners

Presenters

Kristin Leslie, ATP, MAT, OTR/L

Kristin Leslie is an occupational therapist and an assistive technology professional who is currently in the role of director at the Special Education Technology Center (SETC).  She has worked in special education in Washington state public schools for 23 years. Her leadership role at SETC includes providing guidance to administrators, families, and school teams on assistive technology tools and best practices to remove barriers to student learning.

Sarah Kinsella, MA CCC-SLP

Sarah Kinsella is a Speech-Language Pathologist with a passion for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and supporting students with complex communication needs. She holds a Master’s degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and has worked in the public school setting for 11 years. She also served as the district Assistive Technology Specialist for 7 years, working with multidisciplinary teams and families to support students with a variety of Assistive Technology and AAC needs. She is passionate about her field and thankful for the students with whom she works as they help her learn and grow along the way.
