Join us for a dynamic virtual class that will give you foundational knowledge of how AI can be used to personalize learning in diverse classrooms. Discover how AI tools can increase student engagement, enhance curriculum access, and make lessons more relevant for students, including those with learning disabilities.
This session will demonstrate AI’s role in differentiating instruction, building background knowledge, and creating personalized learning paths. You’ll gain proactive strategies for adapting curriculum while seeing a comparison of a variety of AI tools. Learn how AI can support Universal Design for Learning (UDL) by helping teachers plan lessons that provide multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression to meet the needs of all learners. The session will offer practical approaches to make your instruction more responsive, meaningful, and inclusive. Walk away with actionable strategies to build more adaptable, student-centered classrooms!
Learning Objectives
Goal 1: Develop a comprehensive understanding of generative AI and its application in creating customized educational content for diverse student needs.
- Explain the concept of generative AI and differentiate between key AI programs (e.g., free vs. paid), identifying their features and applications in education.
Goal 2: Enhance educators’ ability to integrate AI tools into their instructional practices.
- Demonstrate how to import and integrate content into AI tools, including attaching files and using chat-based inputs.
- Construct effective AI prompts for tasks such as creating rubrics, generating activities, and adapting content to meet diverse student needs.
- Utilize AI tools like MagicSchool AI, Brisk, and Diffit to design lesson-aligned activities that enhance student engagement and learning.
Goal 3: Build educators’ confidence in using AI effectively to create inclusive, engaging, and personalized learning experiences.
- Apply strategies to ensure AI-generated content is culturally relevant, accessible, and inclusive (e.g., text leveling and vocabulary support).

Presenters
Dan Herlihy, MA in Adult Learning, Assistive Technology Resource Specialist
Dan Herlihy has worked in the education field for over 35 years, working in Special Education classrooms, as a Computer Resource Specialist, Network Administrator, Assistive Technology Resource Specialist and developing Wilderness Programs for at-risk students. He has presented nationally and internationally at conferences and in school districts on topics ranging from Technology Solutions for Struggling Students to Promoting Higher Order Thinking. He has also written numerous books and articles on technology integration and produced educational activities for educators and students, as well as online videos for educators showcasing technology integration. His expertise is in taking diverse technologies and connecting them together to provide solutions for access. Dan completed research in new approaches to professional development and completed a M.A. in adult learning in 2023.
Sharon Redmon, M.S., Ad.Ed. AT, ATP
Sharon Redmon is a SpEd and GenEd teacher with over 20 years of experience. She holds a Masters of Science degree in Adaptive Education: Assistive Technology and an Assistive Technology Practitioner (ATP) license from RESNA. Sharon’s passion for AT and especially AAC began with her first teaching job in WI where she became involved in WATI and continues today as a leader in the WI AAC Network created by an AAC Communicator. Sharon has been an AT specialist for a WI and WA school district, ECSE teacher (low incidence population), SPED/ABA/Autism coordinator/teacher, high school and kindergarten teacher and now ATP in private practice. Her classroom experience in WI, WA and overseas schools, has given her a unique perspective on how UDL, AT, and AAC intertwine. She is excited to be back in Washington State and working with individuals of all ages and abilities to access communication and their environment.
Tracy Dabbs
Tracy Dabbs is the Coordinator of Technology and Innovation and UDL Lead for the Burlington-Edison School District. She has nearly 30 years of experience in education with a focus on Leadership, Technology, Professional Learning and UDL.
